Annual Profections and Timelords

Have you ever noticed how life seems to shift focus every so often?
One year is about relationships, another about career, another about deep inner growth.
That’s not random.
In ancient astrology, these shifts are called Profections. Each year, a new part of your chart “takes the stage.” And the ruler of the house that has come into focus becomes the Time Lord of the year. Let's dive in...

Annual Profections and Timelords are an ancient timing technique in astrology that is used to help a person outline the themes and cycles of their life and determine what planet has the most influence over those cycles.
With Hellenistic techniques like Annual Profections, we look at a natal chart through the lens of whole sign houses. The ascendant anchors our natal wheel and determines the first house. For the first year of a person’s life (age 0-1), house one provides the theme of the year. These are your Annual Profections. This continues each year (from birthday to birthday) with the next house taking over and providing the theme of the year. When all 12 houses have had their turn, we start again.
Like this.

Each house offers a specific theme related to a person’s life.

As we circle the wheel, we go from personal houses to social houses.
Let’s say you are turning 24. On your 24th birthday, we cycle back to the start of the wheel, and house one takes focus. The first house is how we show up in the world, sometimes called the helm. It is how we appear and navigate our being. This can mean a year of self-discovery, identity, how you show yourself to the world, and what really resonates with you.
But it goes much deeper than that. The ruler of each house, when it is highlighted through Annual Profections, is considered to be the Time Lord of that year.
The Time Lord plays a big part in how the year will play out.
So, if this is your 24th birthday and you are a Capricorn rising, that means Saturn is your Time Lord for the year.
Saturn is all about rules, structure, order, and time. I always joke that Saturn gives off strict but loving parent energy. They want you to grow and learn lessons, but they are never going to let you off easy. This kind of energy can show up as high organizational skills, an overachieving nature, or possibly as high masking to fit in with societal structures, maybe a perfectionist, or a type-A personality. Remember, rules, order, structure, “Get it done and do it right,” energy.
If you combine the theme of the year with the archetypal nature of the ruling planet, that will further clarify the direction of the energy for the year.
Now, if you are a Capricorn rising, you’re probably already use to that Saturnian energy, but because this is a first house year, it’s going to feel like it has been turned up to 11 as the focus of Saturn is pointed squarely at you and how you show up in the world.
When Saturn is running the show and demanding we be our most authentic selves. This may mean a year where your identity is challenged in ways that force you to really show up for yourself. Which can feel hard at first but results in a new sense of empowerment.
Knowing the theme and energetic flavor of the year is just the start.
For the remainder of that year, Saturn’s movements, being your Time Lord, will also have a distinct impact on you via the challenges and lessons you will learn. You’ll want to study your chart and the year ahead transits or connect with an astrologer to do it. Know the transits, aspects, and connections Saturn makes during its course through the year. Any aspects to planets in the Natal Chart, and aspects made in transit are going to be important. And understanding them will help you to pinpoint times of greater importance and influence on you during Saturn's year as Time Lord.
I picked on Capricorns for this example. For your chart, look at the ascendant. Remember we use whole sign houses for this, so if you’re reading your chart in a different format, you may need to switch it up for this technique. Whatever sign your ascendant is in, that is your first house.
