Exalted Mercury in Virgo

Mercury is entering Virgo on September 2nd. This is a positive shift because Virgo is not only one of Mercury’s home signs, it is also Mercury’s place of exaltation.

Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo, and through those two signs we get to see different halves of its ruler. Mercury in Gemini is versatile, curious, and a social butterfly that thrives on mental stimulation, which allows it to see multiple sides of a situation. In contrast, Mercury in Virgo is analytical, detail-oriented, and practical, allowing it to organize and execute ideas with precision.

When in either of its home signs, Mercury is able to operate without limitations, but in the place of exaltation, Mercury is at its strongest. That mental energy is at peak performance.

That burst of mental energy can make us feel more productive, organized, focused, and practical. We might find we are better able to communicate our ideas with others, though possibly with a little less sugar-coating. Virgo excels at data and analysis. Their minds are sharp, and their problem-solving skills are nearly unmatched. But all that icy focus, that relentless drive to isolate the facts and find a solution, carries its own shadow. Emotional depth, for example, often slips through their fingers. Not that emotion is absent in this Mercury sign. It's there. The problem is their minds are focused on efficiency. And, well, emotions are messy and unwieldy, so they are rarely focused on. They forget, sometimes, that people aren’t puzzles to be solved. So when they offer advice on how to do or fix something, it can feel overly critical and harsh in delivery.

So, while Mercury is transiting through its home of Virgo from 9/2-9/18, enjoy the benefits of the mental boost. This is especially true on 9/13 when the Sun and Mercury are conjoined. Use this as a time to get yourself on track, to be your most productive self, and to brainstorm for the future. Just remember, especially if you have strong natal Mercury placements here, to be aware of how you speak when dealing with others.
